Bird nesting refers to a tangled mass of thread that builds up underneath the fabric during stitching, usually caused by the bobbin thread not feeding or engaging properly — it's a frustrating, messy failure mode, but it usually traces back to one of a few specific, checkable causes.
Incorrect threading is the first thing to check
A top thread that's not properly seated in the tension discs, or threaded slightly out of the correct path, can fail to engage properly with the bobbin thread during stitch formation, leading directly to nesting — rethreading carefully from scratch, rather than assuming the existing threading is correct, is a fast first check.
A dirty or damaged bobbin area contributes
Lint buildup or a burr in the bobbin case or hook area can disrupt the precise mechanical timing needed for the bobbin thread to properly catch the top thread — this is another reason regular cleaning of the bobbin area, discussed in general machine maintenance, matters specifically for preventing nesting.
Incorrect or worn needle can be a contributing factor
A bent or wrong-size needle can disrupt the precise timing between the needle and the bobbin hook needed for clean stitch formation — checking needle condition and correct size for the current thread and fabric is worth doing alongside a rethreading check.
Tension imbalance between top and bobbin thread

Stop and fix immediately rather than continuing
Once nesting starts, continuing to stitch generally makes the tangle worse and risks actual thread breakage or needle damage — stopping immediately, clearing the tangled thread, and working through the checks above before resuming saves more time than trying to push through and hoping it resolves itself.
