How to Make a Free Product Mockup

A flat design on a plain background tells a shopper what the artwork looks like. A mockup — that same design shown on an actual t-shirt, mug, or tote bag — tells them what they're actually buying. Listings with realistic mockups consistently outperform flat design previews, because they answer the question a shopper actually has: "what does this look like as a real product?"
Building a mockup in a few steps
- Open the Mockup Generator and choose a product template.
- Upload your design — it gets automatically warped and positioned onto the product's printable area.
- Adjust size and position until it sits naturally on the product, matching where it would realistically be printed.
- Download the finished mockup image for your listing.
What makes a mockup look convincing
- Scale — a design that's too large or too small relative to the product immediately looks off, even to someone who can't articulate exactly why.
- Placement — centered on a t-shirt chest, not shifted to one side unless that's a deliberate design choice.
- Lighting and shadow — good mockup templates already have this baked in; the design should sit naturally on the fabric or surface texture rather than looking pasted flat on top.
Multiple mockups per listing
Etsy and most marketplaces let you upload several photos per listing — showing your design on 2-3 different products or in a couple of colorways gives shoppers more context than a single mockup image, and tends to increase both clicks and conversion on the listing.
