How to Get Your First 10 Etsy Sales
Guide · Etsy Tools
The first sales are the hardest ones to get, precisely because Etsy's search algorithm favors listings with an existing track record — sales, reviews, favorites — which a brand-new shop doesn't have yet. Breaking that initial chicken-and-egg problem takes a slightly different approach than optimizing an already-established shop.
Nail the basics before anything else
Clear, well-lit photos, a specific and honestly descriptive title, and complete listing details matter more for a new shop than for an established one, because a new listing has no track record to fall back on if the content itself doesn't convince a shopper. There's no shortcut around getting the fundamentals right first.
Start with a smaller, more specific keyword niche
Competing directly against established shops for a broad, high-competition search term is much harder than ranking for a more specific, lower-competition phrase that still matches real buyer intent — a specific niche term gets you in front of fewer but more relevant searchers, faster, while your shop builds its initial track record.
Bring your own initial traffic
Since Etsy's algorithm rewards early engagement, driving some of your first visits from outside the platform — social media, a personal network, a relevant online community — gives new listings an early signal of interest that helps them start climbing in Etsy's own search results too.
Price fairly, not artificially low, for the first sales
It's tempting to underprice heavily just to get initial sales moving, but a string of unprofitable first sales doesn't actually help long term — a fair price with excellent presentation and honest, specific descriptions converts nearly as well without training your shop (and yourself) to operate at a loss.
Respond to every early message quickly
A new shop's first few customer interactions matter disproportionately, since a bad first-buyer experience can become a public review before you've had a chance to build a track record that would otherwise balance it out. Fast, helpful responses to a new shop's first messages are worth the extra attention.
