How to Download a YouTube Video's Thumbnail

Every YouTube video's thumbnail is already a public image hosted on YouTube's own servers — there's no video download involved in getting it, just a direct link to a JPG that anyone can access.
Downloading a thumbnail in two steps
- Copy the video's URL from the address bar or the Share button.
- Paste it into the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader — it shows every resolution available for that video, from the 120x90 preview size up to the 1280x720 maximum-resolution version, each with its own download button.
Why there are multiple sizes
YouTube automatically generates several thumbnail resolutions for every upload, originally so different parts of the site and app (search results, sidebar recommendations, mobile previews) could load an appropriately sized image instead of a huge file everywhere. The largest one, maxresdefault, is only generated for videos uploaded in HD — older or lower-resolution uploads may not have it, in which case the next size down, hqdefault, is the best available.

A note on usage rights
A thumbnail is still the channel owner's content, the same as any other image on their channel.
