How to Digitize an Embroidery Design (And What Stitch Count Actually Means)

"Digitizing" confuses a lot of people new to embroidery because it sounds like scanning — it isn't. It's translating artwork into a literal sequence of stitch instructions a machine follows one needle-pass at a time.
What digitizing actually produces
A digitized file (formats like DST, PES, or EXP) contains stitch-by-stitch coordinates, stitch type, and thread color changes — not a picture. Two designs that look identical on screen can have wildly different stitch counts depending on how they were digitized: fill density, underlay stitching, and path efficiency all affect the final number.
The three core stitch types

Why stitch count is the real cost driver
Machine time and thread consumption both scale directly with stitch count, not with the design's physical size in inches. A small but dense design (heavy fill, lots of color changes) can cost more to run than a larger design that's mostly simple outline work. This is the single most common pricing mistake new shops make — quoting off "it's a small logo" instead of the actual stitch count.
Getting a real number before you quote
Most digitizing software reports estimated stitch count and run time before you send the file to the machine. Use that number, not a guess, to price the job — factoring in your machine's stitches-per-minute rate, thread cost, and a reasonable margin on top of raw material cost.
