"Compress without losing quality" sounds like a contradiction, but it isn't โ there's real room to shrink most images significantly before any loss becomes visible to the human eye.

Where the "free" compression actually is
Most images out of a phone or camera are wildly larger than they need to be for how they're actually used โ a 12MP photo destined for a 1080px social post carries 10x more pixel data than will ever be displayed. Resizing to the actual output dimensions first, before compressing, often shrinks the file more than compression settings alone.
Finding the quality sweet spot
For JPG, quality settings between 75โ85% are usually visually indistinguishable from 100% to a normal viewer, while cutting file size by 50โ70%. Below about 60% quality, compression artifacts (blocky edges, color banding) start becoming noticeable, especially around text and hard edges.
A practical compression order of operations
Resize to the actual dimensions you need first โ don't compress a huge image and then resize it, resize then compress. Pick the right format for the content (JPG for photos, PNG for graphics/transparency). Then apply moderate lossy compression and check the result at 100% zoom before calling it done, since thumbnail previews hide artifacts that show up at full size.
