How to Check if Your Etsy Shop Name Is Available

Guide · Etsy Tools

Picking a shop name feels like the fun part of starting an Etsy shop, right up until you find out the name you wanted is already taken — or worse, discover that after you've already printed it on packaging and business cards. Checking availability first is a five-minute step that avoids a genuinely painful redo.

Etsy shop names are globally unique

Unlike a business name that might be fine to reuse across different states or countries, Etsy shop names have to be unique across the entire platform — if another seller anywhere in the world already has that exact name, it's unavailable to you regardless of what you sell or where you're located.

Character rules that can silently block a name

Etsy shop names are letters and numbers only — no spaces, no punctuation, no special characters — and have a length limit, which means a name with an ampersand, an apostrophe, or a space in your head has to be adapted before it can actually become a shop name. Deciding on the adapted version (CamelCase instead of spaces is the common workaround) before you check availability saves a round trip.

Taken but inactive shops

A name can appear "taken" even if the shop attached to it hasn't been active in years — Etsy doesn't automatically release shop names from dormant accounts, so a name being unavailable doesn't necessarily mean there's active competition using it, just that it's off the table for you regardless.

Check variations before settling

If your first choice is taken, small variations (adding a relevant word, a location, or a modifier) are usually the fastest path to something both available and still close to your original idea — check a handful of realistic variations rather than picking the first available option that's a poor fit for your brand.

Match the name to a slug-friendly domain, too

If you plan to eventually build a website or social handles around the same name, check that the name also works cleanly as a URL slug and is reasonably available as a social handle — a name that's perfect for Etsy but impossible to get consistently everywhere else creates branding friction down the line.
