Etsy Tags vs Titles: What Each One Is Actually For
Guide · Etsy Tools
It's tempting to treat Etsy's 13 tag slots as just more room to repeat the same keywords already in the title, but tags and titles are read differently by Etsy's search system, and using tags well means covering ground the title doesn't, not duplicating it.
Titles are seen by humans; tags mostly aren't
The title is the headline a shopper actually reads in search results, so it needs to make sense as a phrase, not just as a keyword list. Tags are backend metadata a shopper never directly sees — which means tags can (and should) include phrasing that would sound awkward in a human-facing title, like plural variations, synonyms, and specific use-case phrases.
Use tags to cover synonyms and related searches
If your title already covers "embroidered tote bag," tags are the place to add "canvas tote," "dog lover gift," "farmers market bag" — genuine alternate ways a shopper might search for the same item, rather than restating "embroidered tote bag" thirteen different ways.
Multi-word phrases beat single words in tags
Etsy tags support full phrases (up to a character limit each), and a specific phrase like "corgi lover gift" tends to match a more precise, higher-intent search than the single word "gift" would on its own, which just competes against enormous volume with almost no specificity.
Don't leave tag slots unused
Each unused tag slot is a missed opportunity to match an additional relevant search — filling all available tag slots with genuinely relevant phrases (not padding with irrelevant ones just to fill space) maximizes how many different searches a listing can appear in.
