Etsy Offsite Ads Fee Explained: What It Is and When You Actually Pay It
Guide · Etsy Tools
Offsite Ads is a program where Etsy advertises your listings on other websites and search engines, and if a shopper clicks through from one of those ads and buys, Etsy charges an additional fee on top of its usual transaction and payment processing fees. The part that surprises new sellers is that this fee isn't always optional.
Mandatory vs optional participation
Shops under a certain trailing revenue threshold can opt out of Offsite Ads entirely, but shops above that threshold are automatically enrolled and can't turn it off — meaning as a shop grows past that line, this fee becomes a fixed cost of doing business on the platform rather than a choice.
The fee only applies to attributed sales
You're only charged the offsite ads fee on a sale if that specific sale can be attributed to a click from one of those ads — a sale from a shopper who found your listing through regular Etsy search, or came back directly, doesn't trigger the fee. This means the fee is unpredictable month to month rather than a fixed percentage you can bake into every listing's price with certainty.
It's a percentage on top of everything else
When it applies, the offsite ads fee is calculated as a percentage of the total order value (including shipping), and it stacks on top of Etsy's standard transaction fee and payment processing fee — so an attributed sale nets you meaningfully less than a regular organic sale of the same item at the same price.
Why it matters for pricing
Since you can't predict which specific sales will be attributed to offsite ads, the practical approach is pricing with enough margin that an occasional offsite-ads-fee sale doesn't turn into a loss — running your numbers through a fee calculator using the offsite ads rate as a worst-case scenario tells you your true minimum viable price, not just your best-case one.
