Embroidery Hoop Size Guide
Standard machine embroidery hoop sizes, their real usable stitching area, and how to pick the right one for a design.
Standard hoop sizes

*The number in a hoop's name is its nominal/outer size, not the maximum stitchable area — the needle and presser foot need clearance near the frame, so the real sewing field runs a bit smaller. A "6×10" hoop, for example, actually measures closer to 160×260mm (6.3"×10.2") in real stitching field on many machines, not a literal 6"×10". Always check your specific machine's hoop spec sheet for the exact usable field.
Picking the right hoop
Use the smallest hoop that comfortably fits the design — smaller hoops hold fabric tighter and more evenly, which means fewer registration issues on dense designs. Save the largest hoop for jacket backs and other oversized placements where you have no choice.
