What DPI Do You Actually Need for Printing? (300 vs 150 vs 72)

"Just make it 300 DPI" gets repeated so often that people forget it's not a universal rule โ the right resolution depends entirely on how close the final print will be viewed.

Why viewing distance changes everything
DPI (dots per inch) only matters relative to how close a human eye gets to the surface. A billboard printed at 20 DPI looks perfectly sharp from the street because nobody's standing three inches from it. A business card at 20 DPI looks obviously pixelated because it's held six inches from your face. Match the resolution to the actual viewing distance, not a blanket rule.
The DTF-specific case
DTF transfers are usually viewed and worn close-up, so 300 DPI is the safe target โ 150 DPI is the practical floor where quality starts becoming noticeable on fine detail and small text, especially on cap and left-chest placements that sit close to the eye.
Checking what you actually have
Resolution isn't a fixed property of an image file โ it's a relationship between pixel dimensions and physical print size. A 3000ร3000px image is 300 DPI at 10"ร10", but only 150 DPI once you print it at 20"ร20". Always check the actual DPI at your intended print size before sending a file to press, not just the pixel count.
